Biography
He graduated from the philological faculty of the University of Budapest . In 1952 he graduated from the Leningrad graduate school, where he studied the languages and culture of the Finno-Ugric peoples .
Since 1959, G. Berecki taught at the Department of Finno-Ugric Studies of the University of Budapest , in 1973-1986 he worked as the head of the department.
From 1986 to 1995 - lecturer at the University of Udine (Italy). He taught Hungarian , Estonian , Finnish , Mari languages and Finno-Ugric studies .
Scientific activity
G. Beretski, a major researcher of the Mari language , in his works he examined Finno-Ugric-Turkic relations in a new way, in particular, he analyzed a number of phenomena of the Mari language using materials from the Chuvash and Tatar languages. He explored the relationship between the languages of the Volga-Kama region and the folk poetry of this region.
As a consultant-translator in the 1950-1960s. visited with the musicologist L. Vicar in all Turkic-speaking and Finno-Ugric republics of the Volga region . As a result of their joint work, 4 anthologies dedicated to Mari, Chuvash Udmurt and Tatar music were published in English.
He was engaged in the translation of Estonian literature, in particular, Lennart Meri, and prepared for publication a number of works of Estonian literature.
