Overview
The premier division consists of 12 teams. Each team plays each other three times, a total of 33 matches played by each team per season.
Limerick won the First Division 2016 , and entered the Premier Division. Droeda United has been promoted after winning the playoffs.
On December 22, 2016, the Football Association of Ireland announced that since the 2018 season the league will be reorganized into two divisions of 10 teams, which is one of the recommendations made in the Connor Report 2015 [3] . This meant the abolition of the playoffs to increase / decrease at the end of the 2017 season, and only the champion of the first division moved up [3] .
