History

The count's title was created on December 29, 1706 for John Paulet, 4th Baron Paulet (1668-1743). The Paulet family is descended from Sir Anthony Paulet (1562–1600), who served as governor of Jersey (1588–1600) and captain of the Queen Elizabeth I Tudor Guard. The family's ancestral residence was Hinton House in the village of Hinton St. George in Somerset .

Anthony's eldest son, Sir John Paulet (1585-1649), represented the county of Somerset (1610-1614) and Lyme Regis (1621-1622) in the House of Commons of England. On June 23, 1627, the title of Baron Paulet from Hinton St. George was created for him in the county of Somerset ( Pearsty of England ). During the Civil War, Baron Paulet supported the royalists against parliament.

He was succeeded in 1649 by his son, John Paulet, 2nd Baron Paulet (1615-1665). He sat in the House of Commons from Somerset County (1640–1642) and fought in the royalist army during the Civil War in England .

He was succeeded by his son, John Paulet, 3rd Baron Paulet (1641-1679). He sat in the House of Commons of England from the county of Somerset (1662–1665) and served as Lord Lieutenant Dorset (1674–1679). He was succeeded by his son and namesake, John Paulet, 4th Baron Paulet (1668-1743). He was commissioner at the signing of the Union Act with Scotland . On December 29, 1706, the titles of Viscount Hinton and Earl of Paulet were created for him in the British Peerity system. Count Paulet held the posts of the First Lord of the Treasury (1710-1711), Lord Steward (1711-1714), as well as Lord Lieutenant Devonshire (1702-1714).

He was replaced in 1743 by his eldest son, John Paulet, 2nd Earl of Paulet (1708-1764). During the life of his father, in 1734 , he was called to the House of Lords as Baron Paulet. From 1744 to 1764, he served as Lord Lieutenant of Somerset County . He was not married and had no children. After his death, he was succeeded by his younger brother, Ver Paulet, 3rd Earl of Paulet (1710-1788). He was a member of the House of Commons of Great Britain from Bridgewater (1741-1747) and served as Lord Lieutenant of Devonshire (1771-1788). He was succeeded in 1788 by his eldest son, John Paulet, 4th Earl of Paulet (1756–1819), who served as Lord Lieutenant of the county of Somerset in 1792–1819 . He was replaced by his eldest son and namesake, John Paulet, 4th Earl of Paulet (1783-1864).

In 1864, after the death of the 4th Earl of Paulet (his two sons died during the life of his father), the title passed to his nephew , William Henry Paulet, 5th Earl of Paulet (1827-1899). He was the third son of Vice Admiral Hon. George Paulet (1786-1854), the second son of John Paulet, 4th Earl of Paulet. The race horse of the 6th Earl of Paulet twice won the races at the Grand National (1868 and 1871).

After the death of the 6th Earl in 1899, a dispute arose over his titles and possessions. He was succeeded by his son from his third marriage, William Paulet, 7th Earl of Paulet (1883-1918). William Turner Thomas Paulet (born 1849 ), the earl’s son from his first wife, who was born six months after their marriage, also claimed the inheritance. The 7th Earl of Paulet participated in the First World War with the rank of captain of the Royal Horse Artillery and died of the flu in 1918 . He was succeeded by his only eight-year-old son, George Paulet, 8th Earl of Paulet (1909-1973). He was raised by his mother, then graduated from Eton College as a railway engineer. Despite three marriages, the 8th Earl of Paulet was childless. In 1968, the last Earl of Paulet sold the Hinton estate and settled with his wife on the island of Jersey ( Channel Islands ).

Lady Bridget Paulet (1912-1975), daughter of William Paulet, 7th Earl of Paulet, was a well-known English socialite and a member of Society Beauty in the 1930s.

County Claims

After the death of the 6th Earl of Paulet in 1899, a dispute arose over the inheritance of his titles and possessions. He had a son from his first marriage with Elizabeth Lavinia Newman, William Turner Thomas Paulet, who was born in 1849, while the couple were already married. Earl's wife insisted that he was the father of their child, Captain Paulet had reason to believe that the father of their child was another man, captain William Turner Grenville. However, the count had no other sons, so for many years he treated him as his son. In 1875, William Turner Thomas Paulet lived in a family estate, Grenville Hall in Droxford, bearing the title of courtesy - Viscount Hinton. However, after the birth of William John Lidstone Paulet in 1883, the son of the Earl from his third marriage, his son from the first marriage was entitled to inheritance.

After the death of the 6th Earl of Paulet, his sons declared their claims to paternal titles and estates. On July 27, 1903, the House of Lords Privilege Committee upheld the claims of 15-year-old William John Lidstone Paulet, who became the 7th Earl of Paulet.

His half-brother, William Turner Thomas Paulet, known as Viscount Hinton, married Lydia Ann Shippy, from whom he had one son, William Henry George Paulet (born April 1, 1870). In 1901, after the death of Wilhelmina Paulet, Duchess of Cleveland (1819-1901), widow of a distant relative of the 6th Earl of Paulet, William Henry George Paulet inherited £ 5,000 and became a tea planter in Ceylon .
