The 1996 Rhineland-Palatinate elections were held on March 24, simultaneously with the elections in Baden-Württemberg and Schleswig-Holstein . Despite the loss of votes from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the socio-liberal coalition led by Prime Minister Kurt Beck continued to exist.

Initial position
Since 1991, the Landtag has been headed by the socio-liberal coalition , consisting of the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Free Democratic Party , which was initially headed by Rudolf Scharping , and since 1994, Kurt Beck . The chairman of the Christian Democratic Union , Hans-Otto Wilhelm, re-elected after the lost elections. His successor Werner Langen remained in office for just one year, after which he was replaced by Gester Johannes .
