The 1983 election of the Rhineland-Palatinate Landtag took place on March 6, together with the parliamentary elections , which led to a high turnout of 90.4%. For the first time, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) was unable to join the parliament. The victory was won by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by Bernhard Vogel , who managed to maintain an absolute majority.

The Christian Democratic Union was opposed by the opposition Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Free Democratic Party . Since 1976, Bernhard Vogel , the head of the CDU , has been Prime Minister.
