The 1959 Rhineland-Palatinate Landtag elections were held on April 19. The German Imperial Party (DRP) was able to overcome the five percent barrier and become part of the landstag, but due to the peculiarities of the electoral law, only one party representative entered the parliament.

Starting position
Despite the vast majority of the Christian Democratic Union , Peter Altmeyer decided to form a coalition with the Free Democratic Party (FDP). The opposition was composed of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and the German Imperial Party (DRP).
