Syrdarya Vilayat (region) ( Uzbek. Sirdaryo viloyati / Sirdaryo Viloyati ) is an administrative unit of the Republic of Uzbekistan . The administrative center is the city of Gulistan .

History

The territory of the Syrdarya region was part of various state associations: the empire of the Achaemenids, Kangyuy, the state of Ephthalites, the Turkic Kaganate, the West Turkic Kaganate, the Arab Caliphate, the states of the Samanids, Karakhanids, Khorezmshahs, Chagatai ulus, the empire of Amir Temur, Timuridids, and Shamurids.

With the formation of the Uzbek SSR, the territory of the current Syr Darya region was part of the Tashkent region.

Part of the territory of the current Syr Darya region was previously part of the South Kazakhstan region of the Kazakh SSR.

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 13, 1956 "On the partial change of the border between the Kazakh SSR and the Uzbek SSR", these lands were transferred to the Samarkand region of the Uzbek SSR.

On February 16, 1963, the Syrdarya region was formed in this territory.

Geography

The total area is 5100 kmΒ². The Syrdarya region is located in the central part of Uzbekistan on the left side of the Syrdarya River.

In the north it borders with the Maktaaral and Saryagash regions of the South Kazakhstan region of Kazakhstan , in the south - with the Istaravshan and Zafarabad regions of the Sogd region of Tajikistan , in the west - with the Jizzakh region , in the east - with the Tashkent region .

Climate

The climate is typically continental and arid. The hungry steppe occupies a significant part of the region. The amount of precipitation varies from 130-360 mm per year on the plains to 440-620 mm in the foothills.

In the southeast of the region, dry winds blow for several days in the summer and dust storms rage, damaging crops. The warm period is 247 days, the annual sum of positive temperatures is 5000-5900 Β° C.

Population

The population of the region as of 2019 is 805,134 people. The largest city is Gulistan (with a population of 54,000 people). Other cities of the region are Yangiyer , Syr Darya , Shirin and Bakht .

Economics

Agriculture

The economy of the region is based on agriculture, especially on cotton and wheat . There are thousands of hectares of virgin lands that have been studied for agricultural purposes.

This area has suitable irrigation infrastructure. Over the past few years, pumping stations and other irrigation facilities have been built.

In addition to cotton and wheat, livestock feed, vegetables, melons, pumpkins, potatoes, corn, a variety of fruits and grapes are grown in the region. Cattle breeding has developed very successfully in the region.

It is planned to improve the cotton processing sector of the industry, double agricultural production, build factories for the production of alcohol and vodka, produce jam , tomato juice and ketchup . Part of the production will be exported.

Industry

The industry is based on industries such as the production of building materials and irrigation equipment, and the processing of raw cotton.

Energy

  • Syrdarya State District Power Plant is one of the largest power plants in Uzbekistan, producing a third of the country's electricity. The primary goal for the development of industry is export-oriented production. There are plans for the development and production of steel wire and hybrid products.
  • Farhad hydroelectric power station (hydroelectric power station-16) - a hydroelectric power station on the Syr Darya river (near the city of Shirin) was built by the architect I.Yu. Caracas .
