Biography

Born in the family of a priest Johannes Reland.

At 11, he graduated from high school.

He studied the Hebrew language and Jewish literature in Amsterdam . He studied under Peterus Francois (Pierre de France, 1645-1704), the famous Amsterdam professor of rhetoric, history and Greek, a speaker and a poet.

He studied theology and philosophy in Utrecht in 1690. Then he studied in Leiden, where in 1694 he defended his thesis on philosophy. He was offered the Department of Philosophy and Oriental Languages ​​at Leyden University, but his father did not allow him to work so far from Amsterdam.

In subsequent years, he worked as a home teacher.

In 1699, he became a professor at Harderwick, but in the same year, quit his job to occupy the Department of Oriental Languages ​​in Utrecht. Since 1701 - professor of Oriental languages ​​in Utrecht, since 1703 he also taught the history of Jews.

Studying ancient coins, I discovered Jewish inscriptions on many coins that were previously considered Armenian.

Engaged in the mapping of eastern countries. For example, he compiled an illustrated map of Japan using the original Japanese map, Dutch maps of Nagasaki harbor and a collection of Atlas Japannensis drawings.

He never traveled outside the Netherlands and compiled all his works on the basis of written sources, that is, he was a typical cabinet scientist.

Died of a serious illness.

Family

He was married to Johanna Katarina Teelink, daughter of the burgomaster Zieriksee.

Three children were born in the marriage.
