Meyrick, Edward

Edward Meyrick (1854-1938) is an English teacher and amateur entomologist who was fond of lepidopterology . He specialized in Microlepidoptera and is considered by some as the father of taxonomy for this group [3] [4] .

The researcher who described a number of zoological taxa . The names of these taxa (to indicate authorship) are accompanied by the designation " Meyrick " .

Biography

Educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College in Cambridge [5] . Began to publish in 1875. He lived in Australia for ten years. He wrote many scientific articles, as well as the work of the Handbook of British Lepidoptera (1895) and Exotic Microlepidoptera (multivolume, published in March 1912 - November 1937).

Meyrick was a member of the Royal Entomological Society of London and the Royal Society [6] . His collection of specimens (over 100,000) is in the Museum of Natural History in London. It is believed that he collected more species than anyone else in history [7] .
