Production
According to director Gaspard Noet, from the very beginning the concept was to make a film with the very best dancers they could find both in France and abroad. In record time, the film crew found an abandoned school in Vitry and acquired the rights to the music that they wanted to include in the film.
| I have always been fascinated by situations in which chaos and anarchy begin to reign spontaneously ... The same applies to my work. I feel the greatest pleasure when I do not write anything in advance and, as much as possible, allow the action to develop before my eyes - as if in a documentary ... That is why instead of the usual script I took as a basis such a loud and complex story about dancers whose talent subdued me. "Gaspard Noe |
We started shooting with a description of the length of the page. In other words, the film was shot without a script prepared in advance. According to the director, apart from the first scene staged by the choreographers, the dancers were given “freedom of expression in their individual, almost unconscious, language, which allowed them to release deep inner feelings”. [2]
Another rule was to shoot fast and long takes, so in February 2018, the director shot all the scenes in two weeks. [2]
The scenes were shot in chronological order, however, contrary to the standard step-by-step dance staging, Gaspard Noé pushed the actors to imitate an obsession - “like a trance during occult rituals”. [2] This time the director had no goal through visual and sound effects to show the altered states of consciousness experienced by the characters of the film. On the contrary, he wanted the viewer to see what was happening from the side.
To prepare for the scenes, the dancers listened to music that was already specially selected for the film. In order to pay respect to the era depicted in the film, we chose such music - both energetic and more melodic - which was written no later than the mid-90s. In addition, in order to create a mood familiar to the viewer, they selected tracks that could be close to a wide audience. [2]
| With this project, I again had the opportunity to realize some of my desires and fears on the screen ...Gaspard Noe |
