Manchester United head coach Alex Ferguson often fired Sulscher on the field not in the starting lineup, but as a substitute in the second half (he ranks second in the number of substitution outs in the club’s history - 150 times - behind only Ryan Giggs , who went to replacing 161 times), after which Sulskher successfully entered the game and often scored important goals. By this, the footballer earned himself the nickname “Superzapasnoy” , and for the expression of his face they called him “The killer with the face of a baby” [3] .

Club career

Early years

Solskher in the Molde in 1996

Ole Gunnar Solskher was born in Kristiansund. In the childhood I was engaged in wrestling. His father Oyvind Solskher - the champion of Norway in the classical wrestling of 1966-1971. After playing at first in the third football division for the Klausenengen club, in 1995, Ole Gunnar moved to the Molde club, playing in the top division of the Norwegian championship, scored 31 goals in 42 matches. He earned himself a place in the national team with his game, shortly before he began to attract the interest of the biggest clubs from all over Europe.

Manchester United

First Seasons

In the summer of 1996, the English club Manchester United paid £ 1.5 million for the transfer to Sulschera. This happened after the unsuccessful attempts of the Manchester club to acquire Alan Shearer from Blackburn Rovers ; Shearer eventually moved to Newcastle United [4] . Ole almost immediately found himself in the new team, having distinguished himself in his debut match. Solskjer scored his first goal on August 25 at the Blackburn Rovers goal six minutes after his substitution. Interestingly, the Norwegian also scored his last goal in his career at the Blackburn Gate on March 31, 2007, and also six minutes after the substitution [5] . Later, Ole almost regularly played for the first team, eventually becoming the team's top scorer in the debut season with 19 goals, 18 of which he scored in the Premier League [6] .

In his first season at United, he won the Premier League and helped the team in the Champions League semifinals, when he scored in the second game with Borussia Dortmund , but his goal was disallowed because the judge found a violation. In addition to this, he was nominated for the PFA prize as the best young player in 1997, but the award was won by teammate Sulscher David Beckham [7] .

The 1997/98 season was not very successful for Solskher because of injuries, he scored only 6 goals in the championship [6] .

The start of the 1998/99 season was filled with rumors that Sulscher would leave Old Trafford after a 12 million contract with Manchester United was signed by Dwight York . But thanks to the trust in him from Alex Ferguson and the support of the fans, Sulschere decided to stay with United and fight for his place in the line-up. The author of the winning goal in a dramatic match of the 4th round of the FA Cup with Liverpool [8] . Two weeks later, Solskjer rewrote the record books, re-entering the match against Nottingham Forest on the City Ground, scoring four goals and thereby taking part in United’s impressive victory with a score of 8-1, which was a new championship record on defeats in away games [9] [10] .

1999 Champions League Final

In the 1999 Champions League final, Bayern Munich led 1-0 to the Nou Camp for almost the entire match, but when the added 3 minutes went, Teddy Sheringham and Sulscher, who came in for replacements, scored the ball in an arbitrator-compensated time and brought “Manchester United” to win with a score of 2: 1 [6] [11] . After the match, Sulscher said: “Thank you for the best night of my life, it was better than my first wedding night” [12] .

“As always”

The 1999/2000 season was no different for Sulscher from the previous ones, he scored 15 goals, in 20 matches in the starting lineup, and leaving for a replacement 21 times. His playing form inevitably led to talk that he was leaving Old Trafford . Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United showed interest in the Norwegian striker, but at the end of the 1999/2000 season he expressed a desire to stay at Old Trafford until his 33rd birthday .

Solskjer won his fourth England title in the 2001/02 season, scoring 13 goals in 47 games. In the 2001/02 season, Ole and Rudom Van Nistelroi were put on the Andy Cole and Dwight York bench. .

After a short pause, Ule scored his 100th goal for United in the opening match of the 2002/03 season. Nine goals of Solskher in the championship helped United to get around for a long time Arsenal in the lead in that season in the final weeks of the championship and win their 15th league title, which became the 5th for Ole in the club.

Injury and Return

In September 2003, Solskjer suffered a severe knee injury, soon after scoring his 115th goal in the United in the Champions League match with the Greek Panathinaikos . The season for Ole almost ended, despite the short-term return to the team at the end of the championship, including the appearance in the final match of the England Cup against Millwall , a serious injury threatened the continuation of Sulscher’s football career.

At the beginning of the 2004/05 season, rumors appeared that Ole’s career was completed, but after another operation on the injured knee and a long rehabilitation period, he managed to recover. Norwegian returned to the field in a game with Birmingham on December 28, 2005, which ended in a 2-2 draw and then took part in another 5 games. Despite the long absence in the team, Solskjer remains one of United's favorite players among the fans, who, even in his absence, always sang his name in the stands of Old Trafford . He is popular among fans not only because he became the author of the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final match, but also because the only main player supported the fans in their fight against the purchase of the club by Malcolm Glaser .

Last years of career

On March 31, 2006, Solskher signed a new contract with United until the end of the 2008 season. After experiencing another knee surgery, Ole returned to service by the start of the 2007 pre-season preparation. Solskjer scored twice at the gates of “ Orlando Pirates ” (0: 4), a goal from Preston (2: 1), and Porto (3: 1).

At the 82nd minute of the match against Charlton , Ryan Giggs handed over the captain's armband to Ole Gunnar Sulscher who replaced him, and soon Ole had an excellent chance to score his first goal since September 2003. Sulskher with a powerful kick sent the ball into the net after a good Saa pass on the left flank.

In the Champions League match against the Scottish “ Celtic ” (3: 2), Sulscher, who replaced, successfully played on the finish, scoring a goal in this match, which was the first for the Norwegian in the Champions League in the last three years.

At the end of the season, Solskjer became the six-time Premier League champion.

In late August 2007, Solskjer announced his retirement from football. He stayed at Manchester United and worked there as a striker coach.

Ole Gunnar Solskher's farewell match took place on August 2, 2008 at Old Trafford against Spanish Espanyol (1: 0).
