Biography
Born in Paris. He was the nephew of Brigadier General Nicolas Raff , a revolutionary and commander who earned his general's rank in the squares of Paris, the eternal rival Francois Anrio for the post of commander of the National Guard. During the period of revolution, General Raffa was arrested twice: he was suspected of insufficiently left-wing views, and then completely sympathized with the royalists — for hesitant behavior during the Vandemier insurrection that broke out, which Bonaparte eventually had to suppress. A month before the birth of his nephew, the general died, so this relationship did not bring any dividends to the artist.
At a young age, Raffa was a student of a doctor, but he became interested in drawing, and began to attend evening art classes. First, Raffe attracted painting on porcelain, and he entered the artist in Sevres . Then, deciding to engage in large painting, Raffa first practiced in the Parisian private academy of Suis , where teaching was not conducted as such, but for a modest fee, beginning artists could use the premises and the services of models. Then Raffé studied at the National High School of Fine Arts , after that he studied with artists Gros and Charles and hoped to win the Rome Prize , and when that failed, he concentrated on engraving and lithography.
Becoming a professional artist during the reign of Louis-Philippe , loyal to Napoleon, Raff dedicated his works to the battles and campaigns of the Napoleonic army, to the glory of the Imperial Guard , to the inflexibility of its illustrious grenadiers . As an artist, Raffé made a significant contribution to the formation of the Napoleonic legend, and his works are still widely used in the design of relevant books.
Without remaining aloof from contemporary events, the artist also portrayed the siege of Antwerp , the French conquest of Algeria , the French army’s march on Rome to suppress the revolution of 1848-49 .
As an illustrator, Raffé created engravings for the famous historical works of Thiers , guides to Russian and European cities, published by the Duke Demidov San Donato, and several other publications.
Auguste Raffed died in 1860 in Genoa , his body was taken to Paris and buried in the cemetery of Montparnasse . The name of the artist in Paris named street.
