Biography
The son of a doctor Avadiy Davidovich Birshtein (1868, Smolensk ) and Sofya Yakovlevna Brook (sister of G.Ya. Brook ). In 1932 he graduated from the biological department of Moscow State University. In 1935, for the work on the taxonomy of freshwater crustaceans without protection, the degree of candidate of biological sciences was awarded [1] . He defended his thesis "Relics in the fresh and brackish waters of the USSR" for the degree of Doctor of Biological Sciences (1946). Professor, Department of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy of Invertebrates, Faculty of Biology and Soil (1953-1970). He worked at Moscow State University since 1935 [2] .
In 1940, he founded the Biospeologica Sovietica series.
Research interests: fauna of the Caspian Sea, carcinology, biospelology. Laureate of the Lomonosov Prize (1954) [3] for his work “Study of the fauna of the Kuril-Kamchatka Depression”. He was engaged in carcinology , the study of the fauna of freshwater reservoirs and seas, as well as caves. Developed (together with fellow oceanologists) a scheme of vertical biological zoning of the ocean. He analyzed the concept of "relict" in biology. Co-author of a textbook on zoogeography. During the period of the struggle against “cosmopolitanism” it became a target of critics. For some time he remained at Moscow State University only part-time, mainly teaching in Yaroslavl . In 1955, he signed a “ letter of three hundred, ” directed against the dominance of Lysenkoism [4] . In the 1980s, the scientific activity of Birshtein who died in 1970 was itself studied and comprehended.
