History
In the first half of the 19th century, possession in Bolshaya Lubyanka belonged to a wealthy merchant and the famous antiquarian D. A. Lukhmanov . Then he was bought by the insurance company "Anchor". In 1879, the house of the merchant Lukhmanov was rebuilt according to the design of the architect A. E. Weber [1] .
In 1918, the building was transferred to the Cheka and the office of F. Dzerzhinsky. In 1919, V.I. Lenin repeatedly visited there [2] . Presumably, in the basements of this building, the first executions were carried out under Soviet rule. According to some reports, they lasted until 1954 [1] .
Architecture
Profitable house of the insurance company "Anchor" is built in the spirit of eclecticism . In its design, Renaissance motifs are visible: pilasters with stucco- decorated panels , medallions with busts , arched niches, and balustrades. Colored ceramic panels are placed in the semicircular niches above the windows of the second floor. The edges of the house are flanked by gable roofs [4] .
In the main lobby was a large dvuhmarchevaya stairs. In the niche on the first platform of the stairs was a sculpture of an ancient goddess with a lantern in her hand [5] .
