Biography
Transylvanian Hungarian. He worked as a locksmith. Since 1934 he served in the engineering forces of the Romanian army.
In 1939 he joined the ranks of the Romanian Communist Party . In 1948, after the Communists came to power, he became Deputy Minister of Health, and in 1949-1950 - Minister of Construction of Romania.
From 1945 - a member of the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party , from 1955 to 1965 - a candidate member of the Political Bureau of the RCP, after the appointment of Nicolae Ceausescu as General Secretary of the Romanian Communist Party in 1965, became a member of the Politburo, became a member of the executive committee of the Central Committee of the party.
In 1950, despite limited military experience, L. Salazhan was awarded the rank of army general with the appointment of chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Romania . From 1955 until his death in 1966, he served as Minister of the Armed Forces of Romania. He was a close associate of the leader of the Romanian communists Nicolae Ceausescu , took an active part during the Hungarian revolution of 1956, and later was accused of suppressing unrest by any means, including ordering the security forces to open fire to defeat.
In 1958, on the occasion of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Romania at the proposal of the Minister of the Armed Forces, Colonel General Leontin Salazhan, the Presidium of the Great National Assembly adopted Decree No. 810 of June 14, 1958 “On awarding Soviet soldiers in gratitude for helping the Romanian people in the international struggle for the liberation from the fascist yoke ”medal“ For the liberation from the fascist yoke ”. Then all the military and civilian personnel of the units of the Soviet Army located on the territory of the Romanian People’s Republic were awarded this medal.
Died after an unsuccessful ulcer operation.
