Career

Club

Wetzer began his career as a player in his hometown at the age of 13, speaking for Kinesul. In 1921, he moved for one year to the Törkvesh Budapest club, where he took 4th place, playing with Ferenc Hierzer and Arpad Weiss . Later he returned to his homeland and moved to another club from Timisoara - “Unire”. In 1924, he again went to play abroad, spending the season in the Belgrade BSC and becoming, together with Desideriu Lucky, the first legionary and professional player in the Serbian championship [2] . In the season 1926–1927, he played again for Kinesul, with whom he won the national title in 1926 and 1927. In 1928, he again went to Budapest, where he played for Ujpest and was listed as Rudolf Weder ( Hung. Veder Rudolf ).

In 1929, Wetzer moved to Bucharest “Juventus”, with whom he won the national championship in 1930, together with Emerikh Vogl and Ladislau Raffinsky [3] , and from 1931/1932 became the playing coach of the Timisoar club “Ripensia” - the country's first professional club. In the 1932/1933 season, Wetzer played abroad again in France, because professional clubs also appeared there: he chose Yer, where his compatriot Elek Schwartz played. The club finished the season at the end of the standings and flew into the second league. In 1934–1936, Wetzer played in Division B for ILSA from Timisoara and was his playing coach. Similarly, he spent the season in “Rovinj Grivits Craiova” and two seasons in Timisoar “Elektrik”, ending his playing career in the season 1936/1937.

In the national team

The first match Wetzer spent in 1923 in a game against Yugoslavia (1: 2) in the Cup of King Alexander. In 1924, he participated in the Paris Olympics as part of a national team, where the Romanians lost to the Netherlands 0: 6 in the 1/8 final and dropped out of the tournament. The first goal was scored in 1925 in a match against Bulgaria . In 1930, Wetzer spoke at the World Championships in Uruguay as a captain (instead of Ömerh Vogl ) and a playing coach, along with Octave Lukides, led by the head coach Konstantin Radulescu , who made this decision a few weeks before the tournament began - before that he hadn’t been involved in two years teams. In the preparatory meeting with Greece , which ended in a record 8: 1 victory, Radulescu scored five goals and thus secured a place in the tournament. At the World Championships, the Romanians defeated Peru 3: 1 and lost to the hosts 0-4, leaving the tournament after the group stage.

In 1932, Wetzer held the last match for the national team against Bulgaria (0-2, Belgrade) [4] . In the Balkan Cup, played for the first time in the season 1929/1931, together with Gyula Bodola Wetzer became the top scorer, scoring 7 goals for his team [5] . A total of 17 matches for the national team, he scored 13 goals.

Coaching career

After his career, Wetzer worked as a coach of the clubs Ripensia, ILSA and Elektrika (all Timisoara), Tricolor (Ploiesti), Otelul (Resita), Dynamo from Bucharest and Orasul-Stalin. In 1958, during the purges in the Communist Party, Wetzer was given a warning: not to leave the team of any club without good reason, under the threat of revoking the coaching license [6] .
