Biography

Born in the family of a Korean trader and spent the first 16 years of his life in India.

After moving to Kenya from Britain, where he worked as a translator at the Moroccan Embassy in London, he joined the African National Union of Kenya . After the introduction of a state of emergency on October 20, 1952, and the arrest of party leaders, he found himself at the head of its leadership as an acting Secretary General. He played a key role in providing detainees with the help of lawyers and openly opposed the preservation of British rule in Kenya through the Indian media.

After the declaration of independence of the country in 1963, he took part in the development of the first Constitution.

In 1964-1966 served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and from May to November 1966 - Vice President of Kenya. He did a lot for the wide diplomatic recognition of the country.

However, his relationship with President Kenyata quickly deteriorated due to the growing authoritarianism and corruption of the head of state. But the main reason was Kenyata’s decision to abandon the socialist path of development and use the approaches of capitalist states in management. In particular, the key development program - Session Paper No. 10 was drawn up by American consultants.

In November 1966, the resignation of the Vice President of Kenya on official resignation “for health reasons” was officially announced.

After leaving politics, he became the acting chairman of the Kenyan National Archive, and then with Alan Donovan, co-founder of the African Heritage Foundation, which became the largest pan-African art gallery on the continent.

He was a passionate collector. Acquired over 50,000 books. Kenya’s National Archives has created a library containing 8,000 rare books donated after the death of the politician. Also, the “Murumbi Gallery” was opened in the archive, it contains various African artifacts from his personal collection.
