Biography

Johann Leonhard Frisch was born on March 19, 1666 in the Bavarian town of Sulzbach-Rosenberg [3] . He studied medicine in Nuremberg , Altdorf, Jena and Strasbourg ; upon receiving a doctor’s degree, he visited France , Switzerland and Austria [4] .

In 1691, Frisch was appointed a priest in Hungary , from here he fled to Turkey , where he served as an interpreter during the Great Turkish War [4] .

In 1698 he visited Holland , and then settled in the capital of Germany , where, through the help of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, he received a professorship at the gymnasium [4] .

In 1706, Johann Leonhard Frisch was elected a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences [4] .

Frisch's works concern philology, grammar and the natural sciences; the most famous of them are: “ De insectis tomi XIII ” (13 vols. with 270 tables; they contain a description of insects found in Germany, their development history and a critical analysis of the works of Redi, Swammerdam, Hooke, Loewenguk and others that appeared until then; Berlin , 1720-1738); “ Vollständige Beschreibung der Vögel in Deutschland ” (Berlin, 1735-1765) and, according to N. N. Adelung , his main work is “ Beschreibung von allerlei Insecten in Teutschland ” (Berlin, 13 vol., 1720-1738) [4 ] .

Johann Leonard Frisch died on March 21, 1743 in the city of Berlin.
