History

A large plot on the eastern side of Sobornaya Square, according to the general plan of the city, was reserved for public places and was empty for a long time. In 1835, the plots were allotted for development by private residential buildings. The projects of all five houses were made by architect Sebastian Cherfolio , they formed a single ensemble. The house on the corner with Pushkinskaya street was intended for the court non-commissioned stalmaster of the 5th class. Later he went to the valet of the emperor V.P. Potapov. Under him, the house was expanded from the side of the courtyard. According to Potapov’s testament, the house passed to the clergy of Catherine’s Cathedral , it housed a parish school (according to other sources, the school was already located in the house in 1867). In 1963, the house was completely renovated. The house remains residential, on the ground floor for a long time catering facilities are located [3] [4] [5] .

Architecture

The house is decorated in the same way as the house of Rodax located on the other side of Cathedral Square. The house is square in plan, three-story (counting the high basement, finished with rust). Lush stucco decoration draws evenly spaced window openings, in particular, thin sandriks, and also adorns the frieze. The floral ornament prevails, on the frieze the images of pairs of swans are repeated. In the design, Byzantine motifs used in Old Russian architecture are noted [3] [4] [5] .
