Edward Hymes ( born September 13, 1871 - May 14, 1938 ) is an American chess player . One of the strongest American amateur chess players of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, a member of the Manhattan Chess Club . He participated in a strong international tournament in New York (1894; shared 3-4 places with J. Chauwalter , leaving only world champion V. Steinitz and A. Albina ahead). As part of the US team, a participant in eight traditional telegraph matches against the England team (overall result - 4 out of 8: +1 -1 = 6).

Son - Edward Hymes Jr. (1908-1962) - a lawyer, a famous bridge player (repeated champion of North America) and an amateur chess player.
