Description

Workers have a length of about 4 mm, females are larger, the main color is dark brown to black in males. Eyes are large (up to 14 facets in maximum diameter). It differs from related species ( Lasius pallitarsis , Lasius neoniger , Lasius niger ) in the absence of spaced hairs on the antennae of the antennae and hind tibia, and, unlike others, is more characteristic of forest than open biotopes. Nest in the ground, under stones, in the bedding. This omnivorous species collects eliosomes from seeds, living and dead insects, and also collects the aphid aphids and other insects sucking insects (worms, scale insects), including those that feed on the roots of plants. Colonies can be very large and have many queens, but individual queens can independently and independently establish new anthills. The mating season of winged sexual individuals is observed from May to December in different regions, but the maximum occurs in August [2] [3] .

Classification

The species was first described in 1893 by the Italian worldmecologist Carlo Emery ( Carlo Emery ; 1848-1925) under the original name Lasius niger var. americanus Emery, 1893 based on materials from the USA . Then in the years 1900-1945 it was considered as a subspecies of Lasius niger , then (Gregg EV 1945) had the status of a separate species for five years. In 1950-1955, it was considered as a subspecies of Lasius alienus , after which Edward Wilson brought him into synonyms in his generic revision. Until 2018, it was considered as a synonym for the European species Lasius alienus [1] .
