César Milstein ( born César Milstein ; October 8 , 1927 , Bahia Blanca , Argentina - March 24, 2002 , Cambridge , UK ) - Argentine and British immunologist , 1984 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for theories regarding developmental specificity and control of the immune system and the discovery of the principle of production of monoclonal antibodies . " Together with Georg Köhler, he developed a technique for producing monoclonal antibodies. Member of the Royal Society of London (1975).

Biography

Cesar Milstein was born on October 8, 1927 in Argentina, in the town of Bahia Blanca, near Buenos Aires , in a family of immigrants from the town of Shishkovtsy, Podolsk province, Lazar Milstein and Maxima Vapnyarskaya. [3] [4] [5] Graduated from the University of Buenos Aires and began a dissertation on enzymatic kinetics . In 1958 he moved to the UK at Cambridge University to continue his dissertation, which he defended there in 1960, having received a Ph.D. Milstein later moved to the Medical Research Council in the laboratory of Frederic Senger . A member of the Cambridge College of Darwin (1980) and an honorary member of Cambridge College of Fitzwilliam (1982) [6] .

Member of EMBO (1974). Foreign Member of the NAS of the USA (1981). Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1983). Member of Leopoldina (1983).

Honorary member of the Scandinavian Society of Immunology (1970) [7] and the American Association of Immunologists (1979), as well as the Royal College of Physicians (1983) [6] .

Milstein's wife, Celia, whom he married in 1953, was also an immunologist and participated in his research for many years [8] .

In 1992, Milstein signed the “ Warning to Humanity ” [9] .
