Construction
May 21, 1987 it was laid down at the Sevmash enterprise in Severodvinsk under the name K-442 (serial number - 638).
February 20, 1989 officially entered the lists of ships of the Navy of the USSR.
June 18, 1990 launched.
Service
On March 14, 1991, she was enlisted in the 11th DiPL of the 1st FlPL of the Northern Fleet , on September 24 of the same year she was transferred to the 10th DiPL of the 2nd FlPL of the Pacific Fleet . During the service, she repeatedly took first place among her class nuclear submarines in the various divisions of the Northern Fleet.
On April 13, 1993 it got its modern name due to the fact that the city administration of Chelyabinsk took patronage over it.
In May 1999, in connection with the upcoming repair, it was withdrawn to the reserve. Tentatively in 2002, an average repair was carried out in Vilyuchinsk .
On December 19, 2011, the Assumption Cathedral of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra consecrated a marching temple (onboard iconostasis) [1] for the Chelyabinsk atomic submarine (NPS) of the Pacific Fleet of Russia by order of the Omofor regional charitable public foundation for assistance to veterans and disabled people [ 2] .
On August 28, 2014, K-442 Chelyabinsk was put aboard the Chinese transport ship High Young Shi Yu [3] , which delivered it to the Zvezda DVZ on September 8 [4] . It is assumed that the boat will undergo repairs and modernization under project 949AM, which was developed by the Rubin St. Petersburg Marine Engineering Design Bureau.
