Biography
Born and raised in Jerusalem . His parents were Rosa Braz and Chaim Japhet, who were among the founders of social security in Israel and assistants to MP Henrietta Sold . He was an avid fan of chess and sports. After graduating from Rehavia Grammar School , the first modern Jewish high school in Jerusalem, he served as a notary in Kfar Solda , protecting the Jewish population in Galilee . He was an active member of the Haganah , was arrested by the British occupation authorities and imprisoned . Released only after the creation of the State of Israel . He fought in the battle for Jerusalem in the battalion of Moriah of the Etzioni brigade , participated in escorting convoys to Jerusalem and commanded a mortar crew. After the war, he studied law at the Sorbonne in Paris and created a law office in Jerusalem, which has operated and flourished for more than fifty years. He was also the first Jewish lawyer to represent the Arab community in East Jerusalem and the West Bank after the Six Day War .
Over the years, he took part in marathons and half marathons , and even at the age of 80 he participated in a veteran race of 10 kilometers . He turned out to be the only player who achieved a draw in the simultaneous chess game in Jerusalem against the grandmaster Alexander G. Khuzman , to whom he was invited as the oldest player.
Memory
Chess was the main among his hobbies, and the love of chess, which lasted more than seventy years, was transferred to him with devotion to his children and grandchildren. Since 2014, the Gideon Yaphet Chess Memorial in Jerusalem has been held annually in his honor. In 2018, Yan Alexandrovich Nepomnyashchy won the tournament. [1] [2]
