Content
Early life
Born on November 8, 1803 . The second son of Charles Chetwind-Talbot, 2nd Earl of Talbot (1777-1849), from his marriage to Francis Tomazin Lambert (until 1785-1819), daughter of Charles Lambert.
May 23, 1826 after the death of his older brother, Charles Chetwind-Talbot, Viscount Ingestre (1802-1826), Henry began to wear the title Viscount Ingestre.
On January 10, 1849, after the death of his father, Charles Chetwind-Talbot, 2nd Earl of Talbot , Henry John Chetwind-Talbot inherited the titles of 3rd Earl of Talbot , 3rd Viscount Ingestre and 5th Baron Talbot.
In 1860, after a lengthy and costly lawsuit in the House of Lords, Henry John Chetwind-Talbot, 3rd Earl of Talbot, inherited titles and estates (including Alton Towers ) after the death of his distant relative, Bertram Arthur Talbot, 17th Earl of Shrewsbury (1832-1856), becoming the 18th Earl of Shrewsbury, the 18th Earl of Waterford and the 18th Lord Steward of Ireland.
Military career
Henry Talbot enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1817 . He received the rank of lieutenant in 1824 and commander in 1826 . In 1827, he participated in the Battle of Navarino , was sent by Vice Admiral Edward Codrington to London with a report on the victory. Soon he was promoted to captain . On March 9, 1831 , his father, Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire , appointed him lieutenant of Staffordshire Yeomen . On June 2, 1832, his father appointed him lieutenant colonel of the Staffordshire County Police, and retired from this position in early 1846 .
Henry John Chetwind-Talbot was promoted to rear admiral in 1854 , in 1861 he became vice admiral , and in 1865 he was promoted to admiral .
Viscount Ingestre, sitting in the House of Commons of Great Britain, was a leading supporter of marine inventor Samuel Alfred Warner .
Political career
Viscount Ingestre was first elected to the House of Commons as one of two representatives from Hartford in 1830 . In May of the following 1831, he was again elected to the parliament from the city of Armagh , held a deputy position until August 1831 , and then represented the city of Dublin in the House of Commons. In 1832, he was again elected to Parliament from Hartford . However, on the petition of 1833, the elections were declared invalid. In 1837, he returned to the House of Commons as one of two representatives from South Staffordshire . He occupied this deputy position until he became the successor of his father as the 3rd Earl of Talbot in 1849 . After entering the House of Lords of Great Britain, he served in 1852 as a lord while waiting in the government of the Earl of Derby (whip in the House of Lords). From 1858 to 1859, Earl Talbot served as captain of the honorary corps of gentlemen . In 1858, he was sworn into the Privy Council .
Family
November 8, 1828 Henry John Chetwind-Talbot, then bearing the title of Lord Ingestre, married Lady Sarah Elizabeth Beresford (November 10, 1807 - October 13, 1884), daughter of Henry Beresford, 2nd Marquis of Waterford (1772-1826), and Susan Carpenter (d. 1827). The couple had four sons and four daughters:
- Charles John Chetwind Chetwind-Talbot, 19th Earl of Shrewsbury (April 13, 1830 - May 11, 1877), father's successor.
- Lady Victoria Susan Chetwind-Talbot (February 27, 1831 - June 8, 1856), died unmarried
- Admiral Hon. Walter Cecil Carpenter (March 27, 1834 - May 13, 1904), Member of the House of Commons from County Waterford (1859–1865)
- Lady Constance Harriet Mahonesa Chetwind Talbot (June 15, 1836 - October 10, 1901), wife from 1857 of William Schomberg Robert Kerr, 8th Marquis of Lothian (1832-1870)
- Lady Gertrude Francis Chetwind-Talbot (May 21, 1840 - September 30, 1906), from 1874 the wife of George Robert Charles Herbert, 13th Earl of Pembroke (1850-1895)
- The Honorable Sir Reginald Arthur James Chetwind-Talbot (July 11, 1841 - January 15, 1929), Member of the House of Commons from Stafford (1869-1874) and Governor of Victoria (1904-1908)
- Lady Adelaide Chetwind-Talbot (July 8, 1844 - March 16, 1917), wife since 1868 of Adelbert Brownlow-Cast, 3rd Earl of Brownlow (1844-1921)
- The Hon. Alfred Chetwind-Talbot (September 14, 1848 - May 9, 1913), married since 1882 to the Honorable Emily Auguste Louise de Gray (1852-1912), daughter of Thomas de Gray, 5th Baron Walsingham.
Lord Shrewsbury passed away in June 1868 at the age of 64. His titles were inherited by his eldest son, Charles Chetwind-Talbot, Viscount Ingestre , who became the 19th Earl of Shrewsbury. The Countess Shrewsbury outlived her husband by sixteen years and died in October 1884 at the age of 76.
