Biography
In the early 1890s participated in the organization of the Free Theater (Théâtre-Libre) in Marseille , in which, following the example of the Free Theater , A. Antoine sought to embody the scenic principles of E. Zola .
In his works he widely used the naturalistic principle of “scientific” documentary (newspaper articles, statistical reports, parliamentary reports, etc.), which gave them illustrative features and chronicle. Unlike successive naturalists , E. Fabre is not a passive observer, but a publicist , whose plays are openly biased. His plays are dominated by gloomy pessimistic tendencies.
E. Fabre polemically contrasted his plays with contemporary adultery - salon drama , posed significant economic and social problems in them.
His early comedy “Money” (1895) depicts the characteristic features of a bourgeois family, a predatory, cynical thirst for enrichment. In the comedy "Social Life" (1901) and the drama "Winners" (1908), E. Fabre reveals the essence of bourgeois democracy, exposes the unprincipled struggle for power. The play "Gilded Womb" (1905) shows the mechanics of financial transactions of stockbrokers, the pursuit of profit, which leads to the ruin and death of thousands of people. The play "Locust" (1911) exposes the legend of the "civilizational mission" of white people, shows the crime of the French colonial authorities in Vietnam . In the play The Big Bourgeois (1914a), the playwright created a sharply revealing image of the businessman.
A big fan of Balzac ’s work, he staged the novels of the writer “Life of a Bachelor” (1905) and “The History of the Greatness and Fall of Caesar Birotto” (called “Caesar Birotto”, 1910).
He was honorary chairman of the Society of playwrights and composers of France.
He was buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery .
