Korelov, Mstislav Nikolaevich

Mstislav Nikolaevich Korelov (1911-1995) - Soviet ornithologist, one of the authors of the capital work “Birds of Kazakhstan” (1960-1974), laureate of the State Prize of the Kazakh SSR.

Born on October 4 (17), 1911 in Samarkand in a military family.

In 1930, he graduated from a nine-year school in Tashkent and worked at SAGU, the Central Asian State University, as a laboratory assistant and preparation. At the same time from 1931 to 1936 he studied at the Faculty of Biology.

Since May 1937, he worked in the Alma-Ata State Reserve, first as a junior researcher, then as head of the zoological sector.

From April 20 to July 27, 1941, he was a senior researcher at the Kazakhstan Zonal Laboratory of VNIO, from this position he was drafted into the Red Army, served in the chemical defense troops of the Trans-Baikal Front (platoon commander, head of the field chemical laboratory, head of the chemical service of the regiment), from 1945 to July 1946 - Senior chemist at the NPO warehouse at Arys station (South Kazakhstan).

From August 1, 1946 until his retirement, he worked in the laboratory of ecology and systematics of birds, reptiles and amphibians of the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan.

In 1947 (December 19) he defended his thesis on "Bats of Kazakhstan", on December 30, 1950 he was approved as a senior research fellow.

Described a new subspecies of the Lark Alauda arvensis dementjevi Korelov (1953).

He was one of the three main performers (with I. A. Dolgushin and M. A. Kuzmina) of fundamental work: a 5-volume summary of “Birds of Kazakhstan”. He was the editor of 3 and 4 volumes.

Since 1972, retired.

Laureate of the State Prize of the Kazakh SSR in 1978 - as part of the authors of the directory "Birds of Kazakhstan" He was awarded the medal "For Victory over Germany" (11/22/1945) and "For Labor Valor" (12/30/1953).

He died suddenly on December 30, 1995.
