History

Before the construction of the Trinity Cathedral, the monastery already had the Trinity Church, built in the XVII century at the expense of Theodore and Eva Domashevsky, but it was demolished during the construction of the Assumption Cathedral in the XVIII century. For a long time after this, the Trinity Church was located in the annex to the fraternal building, where the printing house was located.

At the end of the XIX century, it was proposed to restore the Trinity Church in the form of a cathedral. Therefore, the new cathedral was founded in 1899 , but only in 1906 , on the initiative of the Archimandrite Lavra Archbishop Anthony (Khrapovitsky) , construction work was resumed. As a result, the cathedral was built in 1912 according to the project of architect Alexei Shchusev based on the samples of Novgorod-Pskov architecture [1] (they also use the definition “in the old Russian style”). After construction, the cathedral was painted by the laurel artist Hierodeacon Damaskin (Malyuta) . But because of the First World War , only the narthex, the altar of the temple, partially the southern and western walls were painted. In the 1970s , local icon painters, based on sketches by artists Shcherbakov and Frolov, completed the painting of the temple. In the 1990s, the temple was restored and the dome was gilded [2] .

Architecture. Interior

Trinity Cathedral of the Three Apse Cross-Dome Type. It is crowned by a helmet-shaped dome mounted on a cylindrical drum. A cylindrical tower with a staircase that leads to the choirs adjoins the narthex from the north. Mosaics of portals (based on sketches by Alexei Schusev and Nikolai Roerich ) revive the restrained decor of the cathedral on the western and southern facades [3] . Also, at the Holy Gates there is a mosaic icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands with princes bowing before the image. The western entrance of the cathedral is decorated with a mosaic image of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God , around which angels soar in glory, and below the Volyn Saints reverently upcoming. On the north side, the temple is decorated with the image of the New Testament Trinity with Golgotha in the center. The heavy and monolithic walls of the building are decorated little (only a mysterious ornament laid out with bricks at the height of the choirs) [4] .
