Description

Female

Fore wing length 18-23 mm. The male’s wings are orange on top with a dark marginal border, narrower on the hind wings (a number of yellow spots pass on the female on the border). The color of the veins is almost indistinguishable from the general background of the wings. In contrast to the close East Siberian taxon Colias hyperborea , the male lacks bright orange androconial fields at the root of the hind wings. Females have two color forms: orange-red and orange-yellow. Hind wings of females on top with a sharp orange spot.

Range

Butterflies inhabit steppe slopes, meadow plots in larch forests and on southern slopes, mountain meadows and tundra. Develops in one generation in a year. Flight time from late June to late July [1] . Unlike the closely related species, Colias heos , less often sits on flowers.
