He participated in the US championships eight times (1936, 1938, 1940, 1951, 1954, 1957, 1959 and 1961). Repeatedly participated in the US Open .
As a member of the team of the City College of New York, he won the US Intercollegiate Championship (he played on the 2nd board, R. Fine played on the 1st). [one]
In 1942, shared with F. Reinfeld 1-2 places in the championship of the Manhattan Chess Club .
He achieved success in the game by correspondence . As part of the US team, he participated in the 5th correspondence Olympiad (team world championship in correspondence). He played on the 1st board.
In personal meetings he defeated F. Marshall , S. Reshevsky , A. Denker , D. Byrne , E. Mednis and other leading American chess players.
In collaboration with F. Reinfeld released a collection of the international tournament in Kemeri (1937) and prepared a new edition of the book by J. Mason “The Art of Chess”. [2]
In 1977, he published an autobiographical book, “Battle: My 50 Years at the Chessboard” (Combat: My 50 Years at the Chessboard).
