Vila Real ( port. Vila Real ; [ ˈvilɐ ʁiˈaɫ ]) - a city in Portugal , the center of the eponymous district and municipality. Population - 25 thousand inhabitants (city), 50 thousand inhabitants (municipality). The city and the municipality are included in the economic and statistical region Northern Region and the Douro subregion. According to the old administrative division, it was part of the province of Traz-u-Montish and Altu-Douro .

History
The city was founded in 1272 .
In Vila Real, Maximiano Barbosa di Souza , known as Padre Max , a Catholic priest and left - wing radical activist killed by ultra-right militants in 1976, preached. One of the city streets was named after him [2] . Another street of Vila Real is named after General Jaime Nevis , an active participant in the Carnations Revolution , who graduated from school in Vila Real [3] .
Attractions
5 km from the city is the Mateus Palace , a masterpiece of late Portuguese baroque , which became the finalist of the Seven Wonders of Portugal project in 2006.
