History
King of Portugal Afonso III founded the city in 1253 , calling it Viana. In the 16th century, the port of the city gained importance as one of the main ports from which Portuguese explorers went out to make their discoveries . The most remarkable buildings of the city date back to this era. Local folklore is among the richest in the country.
