The eldest son of Francis Talbot, 5th Earl of Shrewsbury (1500-1560), from his first marriage to Mary Dacre (1502-1538). He participated in the invasion of the British army under the command of the Duke of Somerset in Scotland. In October 1557, he was sent by his father to serve with Thomas Percy, 7th Earl of Northumberland . Later, he served for several months on the Scottish border at the head of five hundred horsemen.
On September 25, 1560, after the death of his father, George Talbot inherited the titles of 6th Earl of Shrewsbury , 6th Earl of Waterford, 11th Baron Furnivall , 12th Baron Talbot , 15th Baron Strange of Blackmer , and also an honorary position 6- Lord High Steward of Ireland. After his father’s death, he also inherited a lifelong treasury manager position. In 1561, he became a Knight of the Order of the Garter .
The Earl of Shrewsbury was elected as the guardian of Mary Stuart , Queen of Scotland, who was imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth Tudor in 1568 after she fled to England from Scotland after a catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Lanside . The Queen of England Elizabeth Tudor entrusted the Earl of Shrewsbury with the responsible task of protecting Mary Stuart . For 15 years, George Talbot guarded the arrested Scottish queen.
Mary Stuart was taken to Tatbury Castle (owned by the Earl of Shrewsbury) on February 2, 1569 , but in June George Talbot transferred the captive to his Wingfield estate. in September of the same 1569, the Earl of Shrewsbury delivered the captive to Tatbury Castle. In November 1569, a Northern Uprising broke out under the leadership of the Earls of Northumberland and Westmoreland, who planned to go to Tatbury Castle to release Mary Stewart from prison. The captive queen was taken to Coventry , and in January 1570 returned to Tatbury. In May 1570, the Earl of Shrewsbury transferred the prisoner to Chatsworth ( Derbyshire County) in order to stop another attempt to release her. In October of that year, Cecil and Mildmey visited Chatsworth and agreed to transfer Mary Stuart to Sheffield Castle, the family nest of the Earls of Shrewsbury. In Sheffield , with the exception of rare visits to Buxton , Chatsworth or the old Hardwick Hall , Mary Stuart remained under the protection of the Earl of Shrewsbury for the next fourteen years. In the winter of 1571/1572 , when the Earl of Shrewsbury was in London , Sir Ralph Sadler guarded the captive Scottish Queen.
