Biography
Evgeny Stepanovich Tolotsky was born on February 16, 1890 in the village of Vyshki (now the Tver Region ). In 1915, after graduating from the shipbuilding department of the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute, Emperor Peter the Great , he worked in the design bureau of the Baltic Shipyard . At the same time he studied at the Marine Engineering School of Emperor Nicholas I. In 1916 he was promoted to ship midshipman-shipbuilder . May 6, 1916, after passing the exams for the course of the Marine Engineering School as an external student, he was promoted to second lieutenant in the ship's engineer corps [1] [2] [3] .
In 1918, he was the producer of the Commission on the liquidation of orders of the marine department, was one of the organizers of the transfer of some ships from the Baltic to the Volga during the civil war . In 1919 - observing the 1st category for the construction and repair of warships of the General Directorate of Shipbuilding ( Glacor ). In 1920 he was appointed assistant to the chief of the drawing of the Main Marine Technical and Economic Administration ( GMTKhU ), and in 1922 - the senior receiver of the GMTKhU and assistant to the head of the shipbuilding department of the Technical Department [4] .
In 1924 he was the chief supervisor of the lifting of the Narodovolets hospital ship (displacement of 13,500 tons), which sank in 1920 in Leningrad on the Neva River near the embankment of Vasilyevsky Island [5] .
In the late 1920s, the Central Bureau of Maritime Shipbuilding (TsBMS), under the leadership of E. S. Tolotsky, developed options for the "Azov transhipment schooners", but they were built as small coastal cargo ships of the Pioneer type. In 1929, according to the design of the CBMS group under the leadership of E. S. Tolotsky, the Felix Dzerzhinsky cargo-passenger refrigerated ship was built at the Northern Shipyard . In total, 4 units were built under the project. In 1931, another lead ship was commissioned under the Central Design Bureau design (supervisor E. S. Tolotsky) - the Volga cargo and passenger refrigerated ship, built at the Admiralty Plant . He was the chief designer of refrigerators of the "Tehran" type (two were built in 1931) [3] .
During the Great Patriotic War he remained in the besieged Leningrad. Since 1941, he worked as an assistant to the chief designer of plant No. 189 (Baltic Plant named after S. Ordzhonikidze) and head of the general design department of the design bureau. During the blockade years, he participated in the creation of the project of a small minesweeper, determined its main dimensions, calculated the propellers and the propeller group, and created drawings for the in-line construction of the MT2 raid minesweepers . The lead ship was built during the blockade at the Baltic Shipyard for 4 months and 20 days and was commissioned in November 1943 [2] .
Tolotsky was awarded the medal " For the Defense of Leningrad " and the Order of the Red Star in 1945 [6] .
In 1956, by decision of the Navy of the Armed Forces of the USSR, TsKB-50 developed a project for the conversion of the Project 568 cargo ship into the Project 572 medium landing ship . The chief designer was E. S. Tolotsky. In total, 7 medium landing ships of this project were built [3] .
In the late 1950s, E. Tolotsky was the initiator of the creation of the country's first research and development laboratory of marine acoustics at the Central Research Institute of Shipbuilding Technology [7] .
In 1948, E. S. Tolotsky, the Higher Attestation Commission approved the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences. He became a professor [3] .
Tolotsky was a well-known collector of books, magazines and almanacs. A part of its collection [8] [9] is stored in the Russian State Library .
Evgeny Stepanovich Tolotsky died in 1959 [3] .
