History
Library them. A. S. Pushkin - one of the first libraries on the coast of the Caucasus. It was created by residents of the city in 1899 , on the eve of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the poet [2] . Initially, the library was located in the People’s House of the Society for Benefits to the Poor and worked as a free public library reading room. The charter of the library dated November 2, 1899 defined the purpose of creating a library: “to satisfy the love in the local population for acquiring useful information and knowledge in various ways: religious, moral, agricultural, hygienic, educational ...”. A new draft of the charter of the public reading library in Sochi was prepared in November 1905 for approval by the governor in the Caucasus, Count I. I. Vorontsov-Dashkov [3] .
Later, the library moved to a new building, built on citizens' donations designed by architect A. Ya. Butkin. The opening took place on May 27, 1912 . The construction and development of the library became possible thanks to the help of many intellectuals and entrepreneurs of Sochi: E. P. Maykova, F. G. Khadzhi-Markova, M. S. Zernov , O. V. Vereshchagina, V. I. Sutugina, A. A Tikhomirova, P.P. Kartushin, M.M. and M.A. Zenzinovs, the Dorovatovsky family, etc. They made significant contributions to the library budget, donated to its fund a collection of books and magazines. The honorary members of the library were Count S. Yu. Vitte , a former Minister of Agriculture and State Property A. S. Ermolov . The library's book collection was: in 1909 - 1956 copies, in 1914 - 4000 copies, and in 1917 —7229 copies. [3] [4]
This building, in which the library has been permanently located for over a hundred years, is a historical and cultural monument of the city of Sochi, an architectural monument of public buildings, and has been in state protection since 1975. [five]
The modern library named after A.S. Pushkin offers readers a subscription service and a reading room. Remaining to this day the oldest cultural and information center of the city of Sochi, the library organizes literary and musical evenings, book exhibitions, and other cultural events. [6]
