Morton, 1905

Etymology

The species is named after the entomologist Margaret Ε. Fountaine, who collected and transferred to C. Morton a collection of dragonflies from Algeria for research [2] .

Description

Length 27–34 mm, abdominal length 19–25 mm, hind wing 13–18 mm [3] . At the posterior margin of the pronotum there is only an inconspicuous lobe in the form of a tubercle or transverse rib. In males, the lower anal appendages are short, equal in length to the upper ones. Females are polymorphic in color, have at least three color forms: homochromic with males, heterochromic pale beige and bright orange form [1] . Males have short light upper anal appendages and lower black ones. The eighth abdominal segment is completely blue, and the 9th sternite is black [3] .

Range

East Central Asian species. In the Caucasus it is ubiquitous, sometimes common [1] .

Biology

Years of dragonflies are observed in April-October. Dragonflies are found in springs and streams with poor vegetation, in grassy marshes, as well as in other standing reservoirs (continental and coastal), including brackish and even very salty water [3] . Larvae develop in various water bodies [1] .
