In 1924, at the initiative of the Mickiewicz Committee, literary scholars from Polish universities and scholars were invited in early January to support the efforts of the inhabitants of Novogrudok to perpetuate the memory of the great poet in the mound of the monumental mound. A plot for the mound was bought for 6 thousand zlotys . Earthworks were officially launched in 1924. On May 27, 1924, a capsule with the text on parchment was buried at the site of the future mound. Polish President Stanislav Wojciechowski was the first to throw land at the place where the mound was supposed to be [2] , then members of the Mickiewicz Committee, residents of Novogrudok , representatives of all the voivodship counties , from other parts of Poland and Lithuania .

The hill grew daily, as tourists coming from places connected with the poetry of Mickiewicz brought land from their homeland. Who could not do this personally, sent by mail, with a laconic inscription "Navahrudak, land to perpetuate the memory of the poet Adam Mickiewicz." With the participation of ordinary people, tourists, public organizations and individual institutions, the hill grew, but it was impossible to complete the construction to the end according to plan. In November 1930, when A. Mitskevich’s 75th birthday was celebrated, the committee decided to complete the filling of the monument. The following year, June was declared the "Days of Miscavige." During June, tourist groups and excursions went to Novogrudok. All of them took part in the filling of the mound, and after that they all received badges and were recorded in a memorial book.

On June 28, 1931 in Novogrudok the official opening of the mound was held, in which the President of Poland Ignacy Moscitsky participated; well-known literary scholars, scientists, city delegates, representatives of many organizations and institutions arrived at the ceremony. After an official ceremony in the Catholic Church of the Transfiguration , where the poet was baptized, a city festival was held at the mound. Novogrudok has become a traditional venue of the annual festival with folk songs and dances, dedicated to the poet A. Mitskevich.

A stele with a dedication inscription was installed near the foot of the mound, which in 1998 was replaced by a boulder in connection with the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the poet's birth.

Not far from the mound in 1992, a monument was also erected to A. Mitskevich [3] .

Legend

The legend of the poet’s soul is immortal [4] . Among the locals there is a legend that during public holidays the poet returns from Wawel Cathedral to his native places at night. Passing by the castle , he rises to the mound, poured in his honor, to hear the echo of Nadnemanny songs, to feel their harmony, charm. After a long and thoughtfully sitting on the threshold of the parental home.
