History

The houses were planned in the framework of the project of clearing the territory adjacent to the palace from buildings that do not correspond to the status of the imperial residence, and building it according to exemplary projects. In 1748, Empress Elizabeth ordered on the site of the demolished "clerks' choir" to build 4 stone and 1 wooden houses for the ruler and for the "gentlemen" coming to Sarskoye Selo. By order of September 29, 1748, this was entrusted to the architect S. I. Chevakinsky . One-story houses with baroque-style mezzanines were built in 1752-1753. In 1784, they were expanded by the architect I.V. Neyelov , who built the mezzanines to a full second floor with preserving the general style. In the future, houses were rebuilt in different ways. To the greatest extent, the appearance of the XVIII century was preserved by houses 10 and 12. [2] [3]

Architecture

The houses are close to typical for the urban development of St. Petersburg of the 40-50s of the XVIII century. Rustic blades highlight the corners and central parts of the facade. Platbands of baroque and at the same time strict forms with decorative lock windows frame the windows of both floors. The floors are separated by a wide profiled draft. [2] [3]
