The North Sea Jazz Festival is an annual festival held every second weekend of July in the Netherlands at Ahoy [1] . It used to be held in The Hague , but since 2006 in Rotterdam . This was due to the fact that the Statenhal venue, where the festival was held, was demolished in 2006. As of June 30, 2018, the festival is officially called the NN North Sea Jazz Festival [2] .

History
The founder of the first three-day festival was Paul Acket , a businessman and a big fan of jazz [3] [4] . When Aket sold his company in 1975 , he was able to organize and sponsor the festival. Aket wanted to present the public a wide variety of jazz music, from the American tradition to the European avant-garde . In 1976, the first North Sea Jazz Festival took place. It was an overwhelming success: six venues, thirty hours of concerts and 300 performances attracted more than 9,000 spectators. Legendary musicians such as Benny Goodman , Miles Davis , Billy Extine , Sarah Vaughan , County Basie , Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz were invited.
Several significant awards, such as the Edison Jazz Award , and since 1985, the Bird Awards , were presented at the festival [5] . Initially, the prize was awarded in three categories: Bird Award International, Bird Award Netherlands and Bird Award Special Appreciation . Since 2001, the prize has been awarded in only one category, and first of all, these are aspiring artists who deserve more recognition.
Two additional festivals were introduced in 1990 : the North Sea Jazz Heats, a free festival held in pubs throughout The Hague, and the more exclusive Midsummer Jazz Gala , held in the evening, before the main festival. Artists who performed at the Midsummer Jazz Gala: Tony Bennett , Herbie Hancock and Oscar Peterson .
The festival has grown to fifteen venues, 1,200 artists and about 25,000 visitors a day. The festival is known all over the world among fans of many musical genres that it represents, from traditional Dixieland to swing , bebop , fusion , blues , gospel , funk , soul and drum and bass .
The festival is recognized as "the largest indoor jazz festival in the world" [5] and has the opportunity to demonstrate various jazz trends of all eras. In addition to recognized artists, youth groups and performers are invited.

Since 2000 , in March / April, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival , which was founded as the North Sea Jazz Cape Town, is held in Cape Town ( South Africa ).
The Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival is held in September on the Caribbean island of Curacao ( Netherlands Antilles ).
