Bimetal

Bimetall is a composite material consisting of two or more different layers of metals or their alloys. Thermobimetallic materials belong to the group of precision materials [1] . Bimetal is used [2] :

  • for minting coins (see bimetallic coins ) (various special alloys are used [3] );
  • for the manufacture of housings for petrochemical and nuclear power equipment (corrosion-resistant bimetal is used for this);
  • in the manufacture of plain bearings (in this case, antifriction bimetals are used);
  • in the manufacture of components of rocket and space technology (using bimetals with special properties);
  • in the manufacture of bimetal heating radiators.
  • in antiquity and the Middle Ages were used in the manufacture of swords (today it can be used for decorated knives "under Damascus ")

Corrosion-resistant bimetal

Corrosion-resistant bimetal is a cheap metal (for example, ordinary steel ), coated with a layer of more corrosion-resistant (and expensive) metal. The coating is carried out on one or both sides. As a coating, corrosion-resistant steel, titanium , brass , silver , copper , nickel , aluminum and other metals are used.

Corrosion-resistant bimetal is used for the manufacture of chemical vessels and apparatus, kitchen utensils, cheap clad coins .

The disadvantage of bimetal with this use is, as a rule, the presence of an unprotected edge (cut) in a bimetallic product (end face on a wire, edge on a coin). Bimetal begins to rust from there ( electrochemical corrosion ).

Thermal Sensor

Heat sensitive element of electric stove

Due to the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of metals during heating, the bimetal plate bends towards the metal with a lower CTE.

High Frequency Conductors

Due to the skin effect, the AC density drops towards the middle of the conductor. Therefore, in some cases it is advisable to replace the central part of the conductor with a cheaper (and more durable) metal with poorer electrical characteristics (copper-iron bimetal wire, copper on the outside; copper-silver, silver on the outside).

Anti-friction coating

Babbitt coated or liners are used in plain bearings to reduce friction .
