
Ribatejo
Ribatéju ( port. Ribatejo ) is a historical province of Portugal , the center is the city of Santarem . In 1972, the area was 6.7 thousand km ², the population - 423 thousand people [1] . The main city is Santarem. The whole province is crossed by the Težu River ( port. Tejo ), and the very name Ribatežu is translated as “Tejo coast”. The Tagus River is annually bottled, flooding the nearby lands.
The province is famous for breeding horses and bulls for torada - the Portuguese version of bullfighting . Bullfighting is held every Sunday. In late May - early July, many fairs are held in the province [2] .
One of the centers of the province was the city of Tomar .
