Biography

Jusier Formiga was born on April 14, 1985 in the city of Natal , Rio Grande do Norte . He practiced Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo , achieving black belts in both of these disciplines. He was trained in the Nova União hall [1] .

Beginning of a professional career

He made his debut in mixed martial arts on a professional level in May 2005, using the lever of his elbow made his opponent give up in the first round. Since 2008, he successfully performed in the Brazilian branch of the Shooto promotion, where in particular he won and twice defended the title of champion of South America in the category of 55.8 kg [2] [3] .

Tachi Palace Fights

In 2010, Formiga signed a contract for four fights with the California-based Tachi Palace Fights and made his debut here safely, winning by unanimous decision with Danny Martinez .

In February 2011, on points, lost to Ian McCall , having suffered the first defeat in his professional career [4] .

In August 2011, at the next TPF tournament, he marked a victory over the Japanese Mamoru Yamaguchi [5] .

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Having 14 victories and only one defeat in the track record, Formiga attracted the attention of the largest fighting organization in the world Ultimate Fighting Championship and in July 2012 signed a long-term contract with it [6] . He made his first appearance in the UFC octagon in October, having met with John Dodson in the lightest challenger fight - after a leisurely first round, he began to succumb to Dodson's pressure and lost by TKO in the second round [7] .

In 2013, he defeated Chris Cariaso by unanimous decision [8] , but lost to Joseph Benavides by technical knockout [9] .

In 2014, he celebrated victories over Scott Jorgensen and Zach Makovsky [10] [11] . A battle was also planned against John Moragi , but Formiga was forced to withdraw from this tournament due to injury [12] .

In 2015, by unanimous decision, he defeated compatriot Wilson Reis [13] , but by a separate decision lost to American wrestler Henry Sehudo [14] .

In September 2016, by a unanimous decision, he defeated Dustin Ortiz [15] .

In January 2017, it was planned to fight against Sergio Pettis , but a month before the start of the tournament, Formigu was removed from the card and replaced by John Moraga. Later, by unanimous decision, he lost to Ray Borg , with the help of a strangulation from behind, he forced Utah Sasaki to surrender [16] .

In February 2018, he defeated Ben Nguyen by technical change , earning a bonus for the best performance of the evening [17] .
