November 27, 1845 was awarded the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called [5] .
The son of Ferdinand II . He ascended the throne in the midst of the struggle for the reunification of Italy. He tried to strengthen his position in the country with the help of Austria . After the detachment of Garibaldi’s detachment in Sicily, he made several liberal concessions ( June – July 1860 ). However, on September 6, 1860, revolutionary events forced Francis II to flee Naples to the Gaeta fortress. As a result of a plebiscite on October 21, 1860, the territory of the kingdom of both Sicilies was annexed to the Sardinian kingdom (since 1861 - the single Italian state). After the fall of the besieged Gaeta ( February 1861 ), he was in papal Rome from 1861 to 1870 , and spent the next half of his life wandering around Austria , France and Bavaria (his wife was a Bavarian princess).
I had no children. His heir and the next head of the house of the Sicilian Bourbons was his brother Alfonso Bourbon of Sicily, Count of Di Caserta .
