History

For the effective work of the Bank of Finland, it was necessary to place territorial units in the provincial centers. To design the building of a bank office in Vyborg, a large provincial center of the Grand Duchy of Finland , a well-known architect, professor, academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts Karl Gustav Nyuström , who had previously built the nearby building of the Finnish United Bank , was involved.

According to a project developed in 1908, on the corner of the Market Square at the beginning of the main street of the city in 1910, a red brick building was built with an attic floor under a high patterned multi-colored tiled roof. It showed the features of historical Hanseatic architecture with neo-Gothic motifs; at the same time, some researchers attribute the building to samples of northern Art Nouveau . The operating room was located on the first floor, and the second was reserved for the apartment of the department manager. The building successfully fits into the development of the square and is in harmony with the greenery of the central city park .

Side gable above the main entrance

The facade facing the square is decorated with three triangular pediments . The facade overlooking the avenue is less extended, however it is decorated with a large gable with a gable finish made of granite ; from the side of the avenue is the main entrance to the bank building. An interesting feature of the facade is terracotta decoration, rarely found in Finnish architecture. Sandrics above the windows of the first floor are noteworthy, decorated with high reliefs that reflect the characteristics of Vyborg history and economy. In each of them, paired putti hold emblems such as the emblems of Torgils Knutsson , the Vyborg province, the emblem of the Hansa, etc. Other gable decorations are numerous small details, including crowns and symbols of wealth - masks of pigs, rams and a shepherd.

The building was damaged during the Soviet-Finnish wars (1939-1944) , but was repaired in the post-war period. It consistently housed various banking institutions, as well as units of the executive committee of the local council of people's deputies . The last bank located in the building was a branch of Sberbank ; since the 2000s, all the premises have been occupied by units of the administration of the Vyborg region , including education management.

In 2010, during the repair, the tiled roof was replaced with metal; the multi-colored tile pattern was lost even earlier as a result of post-war repair. Other post-war changes in the exterior design of the building include the replacement of some emblems on the facade. In particular, the composition of the main entrance ends with a sandrick with the figures of a youth and the coat of arms of Vyborg under the pediment; earlier the youths held the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Finland .
