History
Foundation
The history of the Semargl group dates back to a relatively distant 1997 , when its creator Rutarp, in addition to determining the subsequent direction of creativity ( melodic death / black metal ), formed the foundations of its philosophy. Gradually picking up and staffing the lineup, already in 1999, Semargl recorded their first demo, consisting of 4 songs and one cover of the song by At The Gates .
Continuing to accumulate material, but only after 3 years, Semargl create a second demo tape, which was also not published. One of the four songs of this demo (“The Falling”) will later be re-recorded for the band's debut album. In 2003, the permanent composition of the group was fully formed: Rutarp - vocals, Shaddar - guitar, Kirkill - bass, Equinox - drums, Shamala - keyboards, Morthvarg - guitar.
As you join the team, each of its members contributes to the overall sound. So, thanks to Shaddar, there is an additional bias towards black metal , and Shamala piano parts add to the tough music a particularly noticeable later melody and atmospheric character. Thus, from the very beginning of their creative path, Semargl does not close itself within the framework of one genre, but instead of banal mixing and combining styles, it also introduces new elements into them.
Development
In May 2004, the band visited the Polish city of Bialystok , where at the Hertz studios ( Vader , Asgaard , Decapitated , Hate , Vesania ... were already mentioned here) working on their debut album. “Attack On God”, which was destined to see the light on April 16, 2005 on the Russian label More Hate Productions [1] , includes 8 tracks, the style of which ranges from melodic black metal to brutal death metal with significant keyboard influences. The basis of the lyrics and propaganda (since then the traditional component of the booklets of the discs) is a philosophy based on the principles of Satanism, in its vision by members of the group. Shortly after the release, this album collects many compliments from domestic and foreign critics, with the result that in 2006, the American label Deathgasm Records [2] completely redeems the rights to publish the disc in the United States , providing it with a new, professionally designed booklet.
In 2005, Morthvarg and Shamala left the band, and the rest of the members began to record the next album without delay. “Satanogenesis” was recorded in the same studio Hertz in May 2005 and despite the relatively short period since the debut album was created, the second creation differs significantly from it: the sound becomes more raw, the music itself is faster, and the lyrics are even more evil and blasphemous . The final album includes 13 tracks, including several industrial / dark electro tracks. By tradition, the booklet of the disc contains propaganda. Satanogenesis also goes to Deathgasm Records ( USA ) on June 8, 2006, and after only a few months the band goes to Germany to record the third disc.
This time, the recording, mixing and mastering of the album are held in the Echolane Recording Studio ( Bad Bergen , Germany ) by the sound engineer Kai Schwerdtfeger. The recorded album, later entitled “Manifest” (the manifestation of war, as a radical method for solving the problems of mankind), is musically and ideologically divided into three logical parts (“Radius”, “Eradication” and “Verdict”) and contains 13 tracks, as well as a multimedia section with a video for the song “Selection”.
At that stage, “Manifest” was the highest achievement of the group, demonstrating both the high skill of the participants and their ability to literally translate their creativity into writing. Musically, this album is already significantly to death metal , and in the category, along with Satanism, new military motifs for the group appear. Almost a year later (August 29, 2007 ), “Manifest” is successfully published and distributed by Deathgasm Records ( USA ).
Following the first clip, Semargl presents a video on the instrumental track "The Manifest of War", which is the sequel to the previous one in terms of its subjects. A video with slogans and propaganda for the Manifest album is also published on the Internet.
In 2007, the lineup is still ongoing: after the drum set, Equinox replaces Erland and bassist Kirkill leaves the band, Hannibal takes his place, who later also becomes the second vocalist of the group, performing the screaming parts in new songs.
In 2008, the team as a headliner holds several performances at festivals in Russia and Ukraine , while continuing to work on material for the next full-length album.
