Puff Daddy and Mase took part in the recording of the song. The song was produced by Stevie J. and Sean “Puffy” Combs and it contains a sample from Diana Ross 's song “ I'm Coming Out ” (1980). The chorus was sung by Kelly Price. According to the results of radio broadcasting and success on the charts, the song is considered one of the most popular singles in the history of hip-hop.
The single reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 , No. 2 on the Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs, and No. 1 on the Hot Rap Singles . And also took 6th place in the UK Singles Chart in the UK [1] . The single was certified as " platinum " on September 3, 1997 [2] .
Released posthumously, the single led the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in 1997, pushing Puff Daddy out of the rapper’s memory for I'll I'll Be Missing You ’. This song is The Notorious BIG's second posthumous single number one after Hypnotize , making him the only artist in Hot 100 history to have two singles posthumously become number one. For him, it was the sixth song with his participation, which became the number one hit posthumously.
In 1998, the single “Mo Money Mo Problems” was nominated for Best rap performance by a duet or group at the 40th Grammy Awards , in the Best Rap Video category at the MTV Video Music Awards 1998 and in the category "Best R&B / Soul or rap video" at the Soul Train Music Awards ceremony .
