As a teenager, he studied violin in Winterthur with Ernst Volters , then in Lausanne with Edmond Appiah . In 1942-1944 studied theology at the University of Lausanne , but then chose the music. Until 1947, he studied musicology at the University of Zurich , at the same time he was conducting under the direction of Samuel Bo-Bovi and Franz von Hösslin and the violin by Willem de Boer .
