As a teenager, he studied violin in Winterthur with Ernst Volters , then in Lausanne with Edmond Appiah . In 1942-1944 studied theology at the University of Lausanne , but then chose the music. In 1948 he defended his dissertation on the French composer and theorist of the XVI century Louis Bourgeois . In 1951-1952 studied composition under the guidance of Paul Hindemith .

In 1950-1969 He led the Wagner Workshop at the Bayreuth Festival . In 1953-1978 led a mixed choir in Bühl . In 1956-1987 taught music history at the Lausanne Conservatory . At the same time in 1969-1987. choirmaster of the Bolshoi Theater of Geneva .
