Jagier, Piero

Born into a poor Jewish agricultural family. After the suicide of his father in 1897, the mother took six sons to her hometown of Florence. There, Jagier received a scholarship, studied theology , but the financial difficulties of the family forced him to drop out of school and go to work on the railway.

He began his literary work in 1911. Under the pseudonym Gino Bianchi collaborated with the magazine La Voce , in which he published a large number of literary and critical articles. Member of the literary circle formed by the magazines La Voce and Unita ( Florence ). It was attended by J. Prezzolini , J. Papini , Mussolini and G. Salvemini ; as a whole, this circle was a mixture of different political movements: socialists - anarchists , nationalists and individualists . Here, under the influence of Giovanni Papini, he goes from materialism to mysticism . During this period, he translates P. Claudel , the work of French authors.

His first book, a satirical “biography” written in 1915 under the influence of the left literary movement, “Risultanza in merito alla vita e al carattere di Gino Bianchi” (“The Meaning of the Life of Gino Bianchi”), is dedicated to an official who has not yet become a person, and a person who has not yet become an official.

Member of the First World War. He goes to the nationalist camp and volunteers for the Italian army. At the front, publishes Astico magazine ; in 1918 he published a collection of poems “Canti di soldati”, revised by him in 1920 under the title “Con me e con gli alpini”. In 1919 he published the autobiographical novel "Ragazzo", which is considered his best work.

In 1920, the writer released a collection with a preface: “Proudhon PG, La guerra e la pace. Pagine scelte ". Subsequently, he published a number of works, but largely ceased literary activity in the 1920s as a result of the rise of fascism .

Jagier’s works are full of faith-seeking mysticism . He was a brilliant stylist.
