The Baghdad Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1944 by the English musician Albert Chaffo and functioned for about two years. After Chaffo left for Great Britain, he broke up. Musicians from the Baghdad Symphony Orchestra subsequently founded a new orchestra. In 1959, the orchestra was called the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra and began to receive payments from the Iraqi government. In 1962, the INSO was closed, but secretly continued to function. In 1970, it was restored. Over the following years, INSO performed in France , Spain , Lebanon and other countries. Many foreign musicians entered it.
During the reign of Saddam Hussein, many members of the orchestra fled from Iraq and traveled to different countries in search of a new job. In 2003 , during the Battle of Baghdad, the orchestra building was burned down. Despite this, INSO remained in the country, toured in northern Iraq, recruiting new musicians. In December of that year, he performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington , in the presence of President George W. Bush , and was a success. The orchestra is currently led by Karim Wasfi.
