Martin Schmidt ( German: Martin Schmidt ; December 12, 1863, Aschersleben - January 14, 1947, Blankenburg , Harz) - German paleontologist and geologist, professor at the University of Stuttgart [2] [3] [4] .

Biography
Martin Schmidt was born into the family of a deacon from Aschersleben , who was interested in science. Martin attended the Stephaneum Gymnasium in Aschersleben; he later bequeathed part of his fossil collection to the local museum of local lore. After graduating from the Domgymnasium gymnasium, he studied zoology, geology and geography in Heidelberg , Berlin and Göttingen , passing the teacher exam in 1887. Then he entered the Geological Institute of Göttingen, where in 1893 he became a candidate of science. From 1895 to 1901 he worked at the Prussian Geological Survey (Preußische Geologische Landesanstalt) and the Mining Academy in Berlin ; in 1896 became a member of the German Geological Society.
Since 1903, Martin Schmidt was in the freshly created geological department at the Württemberg State Statistical Office in Stuttgart , where he was engaged in geological mapping and left 15 maps on a scale of 1: 25000. In 1907 he defended his doctoral dissertation in the geography of the Freudenstadt district. Since 1912, he also taught - as an extraordinary professor of paleontology - at the Technical University of Stuttgart. During the First World War, Schmidt was the captain of the reserve, fought at the front. In 1918, he became the director of the Württembergische Naturaliensammlung collection in Stuttgart and its geological curator - he became the successor to Kurt Lampert . He retired in 1925. Retired in Tubingen and Quedlinburg , and since 1935 - in his native Aschersleben; continued scientific activity - wrote numerous articles. Schmidt remained a bachelor all his life and died with his maternal relatives in Blankenburg .
